Limited Capacity seats available

Psychological ethics and ethics codes are intended to serve multiple purposes (e.g., guiding and educating psychologists, protecting the public, promoting public trust) and need to evolve in the light of new realities. The purpose of this symposium - DEDICATED TO THE MEMORY OF Dr. JEAN PETTIFOR - is to describe emerging issues in psychological ethics related to several such realities. The first paper reviews a number of ethical issues experienced while conducting clinical research in long-term residential care settings, and explores their implications for psychologists working with older adults living in long-term care facilities. The second paper examines the historical development and the contemporary meaning of human rights, and the implications of the results of this analysis for human rights promotion and education in psychology as well as for codes of ethics for psychologists. The third and last paper provides a summary of how changes to the Canadian Code of Ethics for Psychologists were influenced by emerging ethical issues in Canada and other parts of the world, and how the CPA Committee on Ethics has responded to these issues while revising the Canadian Code. Psychologists contribute to as well as benefit from continuing ethical discourse. This dialogue is essential to achieving understanding and harmony in society.
